2019 Is Almost Gone

Wow, I can't believe another year has almost gone by. I did the Goodreads Challenge and said I wanted to read at least 85 books. Well, I read those 85 books and then some. I didn't realize how behind in updating books as I was. I needed to hit my goal number just to know that I could do it.

This year was also my first book con. I went to Shameless and had a blast. Sure I was super nervous and the sheer amount of people freaked me out, but I got to meet some of the best authors ever and those memories are monumental to me.

I have also found some of my new favorite authors this year and started to binge like crazy. It's time I get caught up on series I have loved for years, but also I want to read these new authors. I'd take reading for a living as a job as long as it was only what I wanted to read. But alas, real jobs must be gone too.

Coming up I'll be trying my hardest to be better about talking about the books I've been reading. Right now, I just have so many. This is something I'm back and forth on how I need to do this. I'll get a handle this coming year I hope. Fingers crossed. I also need more tea in my life. I have a ton of coffee because yum.

This year has been really hard for a slew of reasons and I want 2020 to be better and that not only includes more reading, but also more writing. Here's to hoping I can get back on track with some stories I've wanted to share for too many years. Here's to new goals for the new year!

What I'm currently reading:

Book 1 was fantastic and has to be read before Burn.

Let's gaze at these fantastic covers. And the words inside make a great story with love, sass, and action. Ok, I'm off to read more of Pike and Gigi!

What I've been reading!

I've been pretty MIA the first half of this year with only doing a few blog tours. The books I did tours for were great and I found some new favorite books and authors because of them. Since I read a ton of different books it's nice to be able to find new books to read that's a bit different. I had a lot going on personally that kept me from doing the things I loved. I was still reading, but not my normal. Gasp.

The last few weeks, I've delved into the M/M genre of books on my kindle. I've sprinkled in other books but, I reread Daryl Banner, read Devon McCormack, and picked up some new Andrew Grey. Do I more books that I could have reread or started? Hell ya! Each of the books I read have different feels to them. I wanted books with some humor or ones with lots of steamy pages as well as books that are part of world I've already been apart of.

I've also read some other books that weren't M/M. I mean I have thousands of books to choose from. I'm not kidding. I'm afraid of my Kindle. I wish I was able to keep up with my books better, but I've failed big time. And since my memory gives me fits on a constant basis, then it's fun recalling what I've read.

I may have gone on a small bender with Devon. I reread Between These Sheets and it was the only one I owned of his at the time. Welp, I went on vacation and my one click button may have gotten pushed a time or two. I read FU: Fixer Uppers, #Royal, and recently #Burn. I loved these books because they were longer, had duel POVs, and there was steamy between the sheet (wherever they could have it) action.

Yes I plan on reading more Devon, though I have a few other books to finish up. I mean I really have like 20 books in various stages of completion along with a TBR pile I can't calculate. Daryl's books I've mostly finished. But his books that take place in the town of Spruce, those are fantastic. I mean it. Now I'm itching to reread a few of his other books. lol.

I have started a new Andrew book, but haven't gotten far at the moment. But I know it will be good since this series has some crossover characters to the series I've read before. This is a to be continued scenario.

MC romances have also been featured heavily on my Kindle homescreen. What can I say? I love books. So that's what my reading has been looking like at this time. I will be getting and reading several other books. Only I sorta need to read the ones I have now.

Right books are too easy to get a hold of. Though if anyone has book suggestions, let me know.

Reading and Other Things

As you can all see, I've been doing blog tours and it's been fun. I get to read books and discover new authors. New authors can be so much fun to find. I've been a bit on the slacking side with my own personal whatever the hell I want posts on books. Whoops. I have no good reason for it. Well, I was out of commission for a short bit, but I'm on the mend now.

My reading has been all over the place. From sweet romance to the darker romance. Some of them have been quick reads and others have taken a bit of time to complete. While I love reading, I have a new obsession. (No it's not coffee. We go way back to. lol)

No I've really gotten into playing Elder Scrolls online and I am trying to complete everything. Am I crazy? Yes I do believe so. Why? Because there is a lot to do in this game from collecting lore books (see I can't stay away from books) to completing quests. They at least have a wonderful achievements page where I can see my failures. I have so many innocents left to kill! (It's an achievement! I don't go around killing the NPCs all willy nilly.)

Any who. I have a couple of more blog tours coming up. Which I am looking forward to reading and posting on. I have a book to read for book club that's good and dark from what I've heard. Looking forward to it.

That's all for right now. I have lots to take care of. Enjoy this summer all.

She's one step away from finding out what happened the night she lost her family. One step away from leaving him forever.
***********
Tension. That's the first thing I felt as I read about Samantha and Liam. The two characters feed off each other. This forbidden romance was a page turner until the last one when it ends. I screamed in frustration because I was not ready for it to stop. The journey I was being brought on was all consuming. While at times, I felt Samantha acted child like, it wasn't overdone. She is still a child in many ways while her past peppers in the reality that she had to grow up far beyond her years. Liam on the hand was restrained to the point of comical. They wanted each other and he did everything to keep it from going to far no matter what she did to provoke him. This dynamic kept the characters in a constant state of tension. Their relationship certainly wasn't boring. The secondary characters had a lot of depth to them and everyone had human flaws. No one was perfect which was nice. The pace was quick with subtle twists and turns with a deeper story. I'm looking forward to the second installment to this book.

The memory of our last talk heats the air between us—about condoms and sex. And the way he walked in on me when I moaned his name. God. I’m not sure I can stand another talk like that. “I’m not naive, Liam. I know you took me in because I didn’t have anywhere else to go.”
A muscle in his jaw ticks. “That wasn’t exactly the reason. And even though I didn’t know you before I took custody, I’ve grown to care about you over the years. If I didn’t state it clearly enough, then the fault lies with me. I wasn’t raised to show… affection.”
I stare at him, incredulous. Affection? It’s a cold comfort to a girl who’s always wanted the surety of forever. And the word might as well be alien to a man like him. “I’m going to tour the country. The world. I’m leaving, Liam.”
He looks away. “Christ.”
Unease moves through me. “Did you really think I wouldn’t come back?”
“I don’t know why you would want to.”
“Because I care about you.” Liam is six feet of pure muscle and hard will. There’s no way someone like me could go up against him and win. Except that when I take a step closer, he tenses. Another step and he goes still as stone. It gives me a sense of power, enough that I take the final step. “I care about you even though you’re controlling.”
There’s only an inch between the ruffle of my blouse and the flat of his abs.
“You think I’m going to apologize for keeping you safe?” he mutters. “You think I give a damn that you’re mad at me as long as you’re in one piece? That’s the only thing that matters.”
“Because you think of me like a daughter?”
He shakes his head slowly, not breaking eye contact. “No.”
“No?” I whisper.
“When I walked in on you…” His voice is hoarse. “I didn’t think of you like a daughter.”
I should probably be horrified that he would think about me in any way other than family, except I’m the one who started it. I take a step closer, and there’s nowhere for him to go. He’s already backed up against the wall. This big, strong man who could probably make a whole army quake—or at least a battalion. And he’s cornered by me.
This close I can see the green of his eyes, so dark they’re almost emerald, flecked with gold. A scar bisects one dark eyebrow, probably a scar from something terrifying and deadly.
“How did you think of me?” I’m afraid to know the answer, but I’m even more terrified of never knowing. Of being a nameless, faceless body in that writhing crowd, hooking up with a stranger when the man I really want is standing right in front of me, inches away, his breath a feather-touch on my forehead.
A small shake of his head. “It’s not right.”
I’m not sure what right and wrong mean when it comes to us, but I know what it means for music. Someone can play a piece with perfect timing and notation. They can hit every single note, but it still won’t have passion. That part comes from inside. “Then be wrong with me. Don’t make me do it alone.”
I push up on my toes, pressing my lips against his in a blind, artless kiss. I’m off center of his mouth, kissing the corner. He stands still as a statue, letting me wobble on my heels, letting me fall against him, only my broken kiss to balance me.
Grief beats against my ribs. He’s going to make me do it alone. Of course he is. I’m always alone. A small sound escapes me. Loneliness. Pain. It vibrates against his mouth, sound made real.
He jolts as if I’ve shocked him. Something unspools inside him. I feel it in the inch of air between us. And then I feel it in my lips. He takes over the kiss with shocking possession, his hand behind my head, his body turning us so I’m against the wall. He looms in front of me, blocking out the view. There are no vinyl records on the wall, no bass thrumming through concrete and steel. There’s only him, only this. How is it possible that only a few minutes ago I felt powerful? I didn’t know what this would be. I couldn’t know the way I’d revel in surrender.
His tongue touches the seam of my lips, a pure electric sensation that makes me jump. I part my lips in surprise, pulling in the scent of him—man and earth, salt and sea. He tastes elemental. His tongue swipes the tender inside of my bottom lip. It’s more sensitive there than I could have imagined. I feel the slickness of the caress all the way in my core. My thighs clench together.
So careful. So wary. I touch my tongue against his. He’s the one who groans.
His hand fists in my hair, creating a delicious little ache. “Do you know what you’re doing to me?” he breathes, and I try to shake my head; it only makes him pull harder.
“Liam… I need…” It’s like the bedroom when he walked in on me, my hips rocking, mindless, hungry. Worse than that. My whole body is moving restlessly against him.
He tears himself away with a hard sound. Only an inch away. A rough tremor runs through him. It’s a small comfort, knowing that I’ve moved this man. Knowing how much control he has, knowing it’s eroded. But only a small comfort. He still leaves me panting against the door.
“I’m supposed to protect you,” he says, his voice taut with guilt.

Discovering New Books and Authors

How does one find new authors and books these days? Personally, I grew up visiting bookstore, new and used. Inside those walls, there were (even now) rows and rows of bound books. I would find the genre I read and look at the covers and titles. I was trying to discover new books to read and the cover or even the title would be what caught my eye. Then, I would flip it over and read what the book was about.

That's how I discovered so many favorite books and authors back in the day. Today, it's a little more of a challenge. Why? Because my bookstore doesn't have the same amount of books as it did in years past. Games, movies, and other non book material now take up the space once occupied by those precious books. So finding a new author has become harder.

Recently, I have been getting books based off of authors I like and read along with what friends have to say. Most of the time, they are great and it means that I have something to talk to my friends about. Or in some cases, complain about. Then there is that rare case where a Facebook sponsored ad will pop up and it will actually sound good. Yes, I have in fact found authors that way as well.

Recently, I have been participating in a book club. (I've mentioned it before I believe, not that it matters.) Some of the books we have read have been home runs, while others are a bunt gone wrong. (Baseball is the only sport I actually understand and know the terminology on. Oh, how I miss the 2008 days of when I became immersed in the culture. Hey the Tampa Bay Rays made it to the World Series. How epic is that when you are just starting to watch a team.) Digression at its finest.

Just this week, I decided to give a book my husband actually saw and thought looked good. The cover is different as is the story. It's a fantasy novel. Not Epic or High that I can tell, but it would be in the same type of universe as Dungeons and Dragons or Lord of the Rings.

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is a book that I've barely cracked open and it so far I like it. There is something about this kind of book that is great. It really does transport you to another world. Since I'm not done with this book, I can't actually review it.

Something else I will be trying are ARCs and posting reviews. It's a new way to try an author and to help promote them. I'll be posting stuff randomly. There are all sorts of things I want to try out. I might even start playing with recipes and posting them as yummy snacks with reading. I'm not at all pretty in the kitchen, yummy sure, pretty not so much.

Pairing books with food or drinks sounds fun. Like when an author posts playlists while they were reading. Bringing fun into reading is well, FUN. I'm off to do some more reading and sipping on my tea. Today I've gone with a green jasmine. Light and yummy.

Have a great day everyone.

His Leading Man by Ashlyn Kane Review

Title: His Leading Man
Author: Ashlyn Kane
Series: Standalone Title
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance
Publisher: DreamSpinner Press (A DreamSpun Desires Title)
Release Date: June 5 2018
Edition/Format: 1st Edition/Format~ Audio, eBook, Print
Blurb/Synopsis:

He wrote a comedy. Fate directed a romance.
Drew Beaumont is bored of the same old roles: action hero, supervillain, romantic lead. He’s not going to let a fresh gay buddy comedy languish just because they can’t find him the right costar. No, Drew bats his eyelashes and convinces everyone that the movie’s writer should play Drew’s not-so-straight man.
Aspiring writer Steve Sopol has never had a screenplay optioned. Now one of Hollywood’s hottest properties wants to be in a movie Steve hasn’t finished writing— and he wants Steve as his costar. Turns out the chemistry between them is undeniable—on and off-screen.
Drew swore off dating in the biz, but Steve is the whole package: sharp, funny, humble, and cute. For Steve, though, giving in to the movie magic means the end of the privacy he cherishes. Will the credits roll before their ride into the sunset?

This book was sweet with a liberal amount of humor thrown into the story. Drew is an actor who seems to always get his way. Which is why the writer of the movie he's the lead in, gets roped into acting opposite him. Steve is a sweet man that we don't get to know until later on in the story. The way the two men play off each other is perfect.
The concept of the romance developing throughout the filming process was perfect. The men learn about each other as they learn how to act out the script that is being written before it's filmed. That is just awesome. I like that idea. One would never know what the next plot twist would be.
But this story is more than just a romance between these two men, but a little bit of a mystery. It's not a large one, but there are secrets and the mini plot twists. The secondary characters bring the story full circle.
What's not to love about two strong, funny men falling in love and lust with each other? There is a strong amount of humor in the story and it keeps the pace with the writing. Everything feels organic and not forced. I would say if you want a sweet romance then this is a good one.

Honestly, the car couldn’t have been more Drew: a sleek candy-apple-red…. “What is that?” Steve finally asked, stumped.
“This,” Drew said, waving his arm like Vanna White, “is a MacLaren 570GT.”
Bullshit, Steve thought. That is a phallic stand-in. Someone might as well have written I have a big penis on the back. It looked even more dickish blocking in two other cars. “Why is it, though?” he said. “This is LA. You’re never going to be able to drive it faster than twenty miles an hour.”
“Well, it wouldn’t make much of an impression if I picked you up on an e-bike.” Drew put his hand at the small of Steve’s back and ushered him forward.
Steve’s central nervous system lit up like the Hollywood sign. Only muscle memory kept his legs moving forward. “And the bike would have clashed with your tux,” he managed through a suddenly raspy throat.
“See? You understand. The car has to look as good as me.”
They reached the car, and Drew opened the door for Steve and stepped aside to let him enter. Without the searing touch of Drew’s hand at his back, Steve could breathe again. “Suddenly everything makes sense.”
Drew winked as he shut the door.
Steve had mostly recovered by the time Drew slid behind the wheel, but he had heart palpitations all over again as Drew fondled the steering wheel. “So.” He pushed the ignition and the engine purred to life. “I see that you know how to tie a bow tie.”
“This could be a clip-on.” It wasn’t, though; Steve’s mother would kill him.
“Penrose London doesn’t make clip-ons,” Drew said dismissively. “Now, can you help me or not? Leigh always does this for me.” He scrunched up his face in an expression of simultaneous distaste and self-disgust. “That sounded both pathetic and entitled.”
Steve huffed in amusement and tried not to think about what other things Leigh usually did for him. “A combination I’m sure is unique to you.” They turned toward each other in unison, and without overthinking it, Steve reached over and started buttoning Drew’s shirt.
“Hey!” Drew seemed to think about what he was protesting. “I can’t decide if I’m offended at being written off as not special because other people are also pathetic and entitled.”
“Take your time.” Steve reached the final button. His fingers were remarkably steady, even as they accidentally brushed the skin of Drew’s neck. In the close confines of Drew’s ridiculous car, he smelled incredible, warm and fresh and heady at the same time. “I hear it’s fashionable to be late to these things.”
“A fair point. We could….”
Steve tugged Drew’s tie from his pocket and looped it around his neck before crossing one end over the other. When Drew didn’t continue after several seconds’ pause, he looked up. “Could what?”
Drew’s eyes were even darker than usual, his cheeks an unusual pink. Steve was caught for a moment, frozen. Then Drew wet his lips and cleared his throat. “Could get ice cream before we show. You know, since I’m blowing my diet tonight either way.”
Nope. Watching Drew lick an ice cream while trying not to drip any on his own tux sounded like a recipe for wardrobe malfunction. “Pass.” He made the right side of the bow. “I am not explaining ice cream stains to the press.” No one would believe him. Hell, Steve wouldn’t even blame them.
“Always gotta be the voice of reason.” Drew sounded a little strained as Steve finished tying.
With a frown, Steve tucked a finger down the side of the tie. It didn’t seem like it was constricting, but some people were more sensitive than others. “Too tight?”
Drew cleared his throat again. “No, just a tickle. Sorry. Ready to do this?”
Steve sat back in his seat and blew out a breath. Was he ready to subject his life to the kind of intense scrutiny that came along with associating with a megastar? “Probably not!” He should have thought of that before he let Hilary talk him into acting. “But there’s only one way to find out.”

Drew gunned the engine. “That’s the spirit.”

ASHLYN KANE is a Canadian former expat and current hockey fan. She is a writer, editor, handyperson, dog mom, and friend—sometimes all at once.
On any given day she can usually be found walking her ninety-pound baby chocolate lapdog, Indy, or holed up in her office avoiding housework. She has a deep and abiding love of romance novel tropes, a habit of dropping too many f-bombs, and—fortunately—a very forgiving family.
