Series: Standalone Title
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance
Publisher: DreamSpinner Press (A DreamSpun Desires Title)
Release Date: June 5 2018

Blurb/Synopsis:

He wrote a comedy. Fate directed a romance.
Drew Beaumont is bored of the same old roles: action hero, supervillain, romantic lead. He’s not going to let a fresh gay buddy comedy languish just because they can’t find him the right costar. No, Drew bats his eyelashes and convinces everyone that the movie’s writer should play Drew’s not-so-straight man.
Aspiring writer Steve Sopol has never had a screenplay optioned. Now one of Hollywood’s hottest properties wants to be in a movie Steve hasn’t finished writing— and he wants Steve as his costar. Turns out the chemistry between them is undeniable—on and off-screen.
Drew swore off dating in the biz, but Steve is the whole package: sharp, funny, humble, and cute. For Steve, though, giving in to the movie magic means the end of the privacy he cherishes. Will the credits roll before their ride into the sunset?

This book was sweet with a liberal amount of humor thrown into the story. Drew is an actor who seems to always get his way. Which is why the writer of the movie he's the lead in, gets roped into acting opposite him. Steve is a sweet man that we don't get to know until later on in the story. The way the two men play off each other is perfect.
The concept of the romance developing throughout the filming process was perfect. The men learn about each other as they learn how to act out the script that is being written before it's filmed. That is just awesome. I like that idea. One would never know what the next plot twist would be.
But this story is more than just a romance between these two men, but a little bit of a mystery. It's not a large one, but there are secrets and the mini plot twists. The secondary characters bring the story full circle.
What's not to love about two strong, funny men falling in love and lust with each other? There is a strong amount of humor in the story and it keeps the pace with the writing. Everything feels organic and not forced. I would say if you want a sweet romance then this is a good one.

Honestly, the car couldn’t have been more Drew: a sleek candy-apple-red…. “What is that?” Steve finally asked, stumped.
“This,” Drew said, waving his arm like Vanna White, “is a MacLaren 570GT.”
Bullshit, Steve thought. That is a phallic stand-in. Someone might as well have written I have a big penis on the back. It looked even more dickish blocking in two other cars. “Why is it, though?” he said. “This is LA. You’re never going to be able to drive it faster than twenty miles an hour.”
“Well, it wouldn’t make much of an impression if I picked you up on an e-bike.” Drew put his hand at the small of Steve’s back and ushered him forward.
Steve’s central nervous system lit up like the Hollywood sign. Only muscle memory kept his legs moving forward. “And the bike would have clashed with your tux,” he managed through a suddenly raspy throat.
“See? You understand. The car has to look as good as me.”
They reached the car, and Drew opened the door for Steve and stepped aside to let him enter. Without the searing touch of Drew’s hand at his back, Steve could breathe again. “Suddenly everything makes sense.”
Drew winked as he shut the door.
Steve had mostly recovered by the time Drew slid behind the wheel, but he had heart palpitations all over again as Drew fondled the steering wheel. “So.” He pushed the ignition and the engine purred to life. “I see that you know how to tie a bow tie.”
“This could be a clip-on.” It wasn’t, though; Steve’s mother would kill him.
“Penrose London doesn’t make clip-ons,” Drew said dismissively. “Now, can you help me or not? Leigh always does this for me.” He scrunched up his face in an expression of simultaneous distaste and self-disgust. “That sounded both pathetic and entitled.”
Steve huffed in amusement and tried not to think about what other things Leigh usually did for him. “A combination I’m sure is unique to you.” They turned toward each other in unison, and without overthinking it, Steve reached over and started buttoning Drew’s shirt.
“Hey!” Drew seemed to think about what he was protesting. “I can’t decide if I’m offended at being written off as not special because other people are also pathetic and entitled.”
“Take your time.” Steve reached the final button. His fingers were remarkably steady, even as they accidentally brushed the skin of Drew’s neck. In the close confines of Drew’s ridiculous car, he smelled incredible, warm and fresh and heady at the same time. “I hear it’s fashionable to be late to these things.”
“A fair point. We could….”
Steve tugged Drew’s tie from his pocket and looped it around his neck before crossing one end over the other. When Drew didn’t continue after several seconds’ pause, he looked up. “Could what?”
Drew’s eyes were even darker than usual, his cheeks an unusual pink. Steve was caught for a moment, frozen. Then Drew wet his lips and cleared his throat. “Could get ice cream before we show. You know, since I’m blowing my diet tonight either way.”
Nope. Watching Drew lick an ice cream while trying not to drip any on his own tux sounded like a recipe for wardrobe malfunction. “Pass.” He made the right side of the bow. “I am not explaining ice cream stains to the press.” No one would believe him. Hell, Steve wouldn’t even blame them.
“Always gotta be the voice of reason.” Drew sounded a little strained as Steve finished tying.
With a frown, Steve tucked a finger down the side of the tie. It didn’t seem like it was constricting, but some people were more sensitive than others. “Too tight?”
Drew cleared his throat again. “No, just a tickle. Sorry. Ready to do this?”
Steve sat back in his seat and blew out a breath. Was he ready to subject his life to the kind of intense scrutiny that came along with associating with a megastar? “Probably not!” He should have thought of that before he let Hilary talk him into acting. “But there’s only one way to find out.”

Drew gunned the engine. “That’s the spirit.”

Dark Mafia Romance and Procrastination

I have been doing a lot of reading as of late. Mostly, I have been reading books that I haven't read before. Some of those books have been sitting around gathering electronic dust (ebooks if it wasn't clear) and I finally picked them up. I've also gone back and started reading some books I've read before. Why? Because I liked them the first time and have forgotten a lot about the book.

One set of books I read was the Boston Underworld series by A. Zavarelli. Holy shit! Six book in less than a week and that was only because of essential things like sleep, work, and mental relaxation. The books are as follows Crow, Reaper, Ghost, Saint, Thief, and Conor.

There was so much going on with these books. Mafia and sex and danger. Plus, some pretty kick ass females and their hot mafia men. They might not follow the law, but they follow their hearts after their heads stop thinking. (Wrong heads. hehe)

I loved these books and should go into detail for all of them, but alas, I need to reread them to get everything all straight. I loved all of the books for their stories and the characters. There is lot going on in these books with lots of emotions. A. isn't pulling any punches. Out of the series I loved Reaper, Ghost, and Thief. Conor didn't quite meet my expectations of the series. It was good, but it was a shorter story as well.

I read a few lighter books, because damn did those books hit me in the gut and brain. I'll discuss those later.

I've also been playing Elder Scrolls Online a lot. My character has even been dabbling in thievery and assassination. I try to play him to be a nicer guy and choose the best choices. I'm still trying that with a few exceptions. lol. But, I've been playing a lot more than I've been reading.

Life does get in the way of reading as well.

Hope everyone finds a good binge worthy series for themselves. Cheers.

Slacking and Shark Shifters

Yesterday was Saturday and I slacked off on so many things. Why? Because I was gaming online. I play Elder Scrolls Online aka ESO and I had things to accomplish. What might you ask is more important than reading the thousands of books on my TBR pile? Questing and crafting. That's what. Also killing things. Killing things is fun, especially when you get awesome drops. Not that it happens often. But I enjoy it none the less. There's not a lot to think about in the game. Not like when I was playing DnD. That game was stressful. Rolling die is not my strong suit.

I also got to see Ant-man and the Wasp. It was a fun superhero movie. Lots of corny one liners. Nothing to the scale of Deadpool, but to be fair, I don't think there is a scale to what Deadpool says or does. (I'm a Deadpool fan.)

A few days ago, I finished Bite Me Harder by Chris Genovese. I'd read book one some time ago and was intrigued by the notion of shark shifters. I mean wolves have dominated the shifter world. There are also bears and felines as well. Heck one of my favorite shifters is a honey badger. Yes, it's a thing. I digress. Seriously, shark shifters are badass motherfuckers.

In book one, the story is all about tiger sharks with a great white or two at the end. But the author ramps up the story of book two by adding more great whites. (My favorite. Enter Jaws theme song.) Plus, a gang of hammerheads.

The reader is brought on a journey through three POVs. Rafe, Kalina, and Sylvia bring the story to life. We pick up basically where book one ends so it's a fantastic idea to read book one to know what's going on. Can you read book two first? Most likely, but to get the emotional depth of the story, book one is required. That being said. Spoilers are certain to follow. Actually, they are going to follow so beware.

We begin with Sylvia's POV. This is the part that directly correlates to book one. She was on a party barge which ended up attacked by the villain, Evelyn, and her tiger lackey sharks. As we know if we've read book one, lots of people died as well as some of the sharks. Sylvia's best friend Penny was the love interest of Thane and became a tiger shark when she mated with Thane. Sylvia is having PTSD as well as feeling guilty for not being the friend she should have been. What happens? She returns to the land down under to find Penny.

We then meet Rafe, who is a man that loves all creatures and the ocean itself. I really liked this character and how laid back he was. At first, I thought he was going to end up with Sylvia, but he was human and she would be with a shark. Fast forward and we meet sweet Kalina. (Rafe's girl.) This was a great pairing seeing as they fell in love at first sight. (Shifter mojo is my theory.)

Throughout all of this we discover a gang (no other word for it) of hammerheads are creating havoc. (We find this out at a later time.) And we meet Coby, Poet's big brother. Now, he's a shark that I wouldn't mind being around. Savage is the word used in the book and he is certainly that in all aspects. He's appeared to find out what happened to his baby brother, and to exact revenge. And he's a Great White as well. Only, he might actually need theme music because of how dangerous he is.

Sylvia turns out to be the only one to sooth the great white that is Coby and their romance begins. Okay, a shit ton of sex begins and then some feelings. The other couple takes a bit of time to get it on, but they are sweet and adorable. Coby is neither of those things. I mentioned savage right? Just checking cause sweet and adorable does not savage make. Coby is actually able to help Sylvia and her PTSD, by turning her into a great white.

There is Evelyn and her evil gang of hammerheads and also Keenan Kane- Shark Hunter. (There is a twist but I don't wanna spoil something that is kind of obvious and yet sneaky.) The massive fight scene is epic in so many ways and there is a small side story of Penny and Thane told through the eyes of all the characters. The detail in the brutality of the fighting was remarkable. So many emotions were running though me as the fight unfolded. Not everyone makes it out, people are hurt, and yet there is a victory.

There are happy endings of course, but at the same time there is a lot left to be written. Characters that need to find their own mates while others need to be hunted down and gutted like a fish. Am I vengeful toward a certain shark woman? You bet I am. She is evil and I can't wait to see how she is finished off.

Coby was my favorite out of this book even though he never tells the story from his POV. Sylvia did a great job portraying him to where I loved his brooding nature. He is the ultimate bad boy. Rafe was sweet and could hold his own no doubt about it. Heck he saved a seagull in the beginning of the book.

Romance, Action, with a dash of humor made this a fun and entertaining read. The author has started a MC romance series that I've read this year and loved. But that can be talked about another day. So check out Chris' work and have fun playing with the sharks.

Happy reading.

A New Year

Last year, I decided to do the Goodreads challenge. I knew I could read a lot of books since I've done it in the past. I looked at some logs and thought that I would be able to read 80 books no problem. By December I looked and couldn't believe that I was actually about to fail at my goal. I'd read over a hundred books in a year before. After some last minute reading, I ended the year at 85 books. So that was the number I chose to go with this year. Currently, I'm almost 3 books behind. This only means I need to do some super reading.

I'm almost done with a couple of books, but life gets in the way of reading time. Something that must be rectified. I'll find a way to make this all smooth. Books are amazing and authors are awesome. I've have a few books to talk about in the next blog.

I live in an area that doesn't get snow and is normally too hot for my tastes, but this winter I'm cold. No where to the temps of the north, but for me it's enough. I have a fireplace, but it must be cleaned and given the stamp of approval before I even attempt to light a fire. A cup of hot tea, coffee, or cocoa would be fantastic next to a roaring blaze curled up with a soft warm blanket and a book or ten.

Until next time, when I talk about MC romance and shark shifters. Yes, Shark Shifters. They are totally badass. I'll explain when I finish book two of this series.

Stay warm!!

Tabula Rasa by Kitty Thomas

I'm a fan of Kitty Thomas. If that wasn't clear, then I'll make it known because I will be posting several blogs about her work. I really enjoy reading this author for several reasons. Tabula Rasa is one of my absolute favorites of this author's works. Why? Because of the writing of course. There is something about her male leads that lends to wanting to more about them. These are not fluffy happily ever after stories. They have amazing endings that work for the story that's written.

This is one of my go to re-reads. I have a lot of them and several with this author. My absolute favorite book is Broken Dolls and this one is right behind it. Shannon is a great male lead. There's no way I can talk about this book without spoiling so much.

All I can say is, give this book a try. I didn't regret it and I hope you won't either.

Mafia Captive by Kitty Thomas

So there are several authors whose works stick with me. Kitty Thomas is one of them. Not only do I love her work but I reread it a lot. There is something about having read a book and still being able to gain enjoyment from going back to it again and again. Mafia Captive is one of those books, plus it takes place during Christmas. It's become a personal tradition to read it for the holidays.

Kitty writes dark and so her books are not for everyone. They are different and different is good in my opinion. Below is all the fun and pertinent information on this title and on the author herself.

So if you like dark. If you enjoy a good mafia story. If you have a soft spot for furry animals. Or if you like some kink thrown in as well, then this book is for you. Plus Christmas, and the mention of various foods. My mouth is salivating at the thought.

Enjoy!

But when his brother throws Faith at his feet, repainting the scenario to make Leo the hero rescuing her from certain death, his moral fortitude will be tested. If Faith were kinky, it would be easy to live out his fantasy, but she’s not. Not even a little bit. Even the mildest spanking sparks terror in her that Leo can’t bear.
The gift soon becomes a burden as he fights with himself over how to handle the addition to his home. He could release her, but his brother doesn’t do loose ends. Happy Doomsday by David Sosnowski

This is going to be an unusual review reflection on the book Happy Doomsday. Why you may ask? Well, the main reason is that I'm not sure how I would rate this book as a whole. I could rationalize and break down the parts that make up the whole and go from there. This is something which I will end up doing. There are going to be spoilers and I'll try to keep them from spoiling too much.

First off, this is (and was, depending on when this is read,) one of six book from the Kindle First Reads for the month of August. After looking at the other books, I decided this was the one I was going to try out. I like the idea of the zombie apocalypse or "doomsday" books. (See the post about Flesh.)

Okay then, onto the review of this book. I love the cover. It's different enough and after reading the book it makes total sense. The way the book is described put me into a totally different mindset of expectations that what I personally gleaned from the book itself. This is where it gets tricky is my overall liking of the book.

The story has a prologue and then it goes back in time to the beginning for the three main characters. I was expecting the three characters to meet up quickly and that the story would have been about the three of them in this doomsday scenario. That is not what happened. It was over halfway into the novel before the events in the prologue to even happen.

I was tempted several times to put the book down and expect not to finish it. I felt that it was a bit on the boring side in several places. However, this is one of the parts that I have to rationalize and give a good solid 4 to 5 stars on and that's the way it was written. Now I'm sure there may be some confusion seeing as I just said the opposite, but what I mean is that, I couldn't stop thinking about the book. Even as I questioned why I was reading the book and my feelings about said book, I either couldn't put it down or I thought about it and needed to know the ending.

Having read several other reviews since I finished the book, I know I'm not the only one out there that had varied thoughts and feeling on what was written on the page. Which is a good thing.

So onto major spoilers.

This is the warning I'm giving.

So this book is about Dev, Lucy, and Marcus, all 16 years old. Lucy and Marcus find each other pretty quickly after the event where basically all life just is gone. There is no explanation as to what happened or why it happened. What is known or what is heavily implied, is that the only survivors are ones that were just about to end their lives. At the end of the book, the event is never explained with the story being open ended.

Dev was the most explained and fully fledged character and most of the book has to do with his survival. He has Asperger's and he decided to stay in his home and make his neighborhood into a fortress. The author goes into detail about Dev's thought processes that at times seemed overkill, but we can understand Dev really well. Including his rationalization of needing eggs for breakfast.

Lucy and Marcus have their backstories explained rather quickly and without the fine detail. In the end Marcus' story ultimately doesn't matter due to his rather quick and off the page death. (I was actually shocked when this happened.) Lucy ended up pregnant with her best friend's baby and she discovers that he killed himself, which incidentally was what she was going to do once she found out. It's at this point there is a lot of mentions of abortion because she doesn't want the baby and religion. She loses the baby during the event, but ends up becoming pregnant by Marcus.

Marcus was a character that wasn't very likable in a lot of ways. And I was shocked and saddened by his death because of the baby, and the few things he did to become likable. In the way I read the book, he created a path for Dev. As did Lucy and the baby.

Everything that happened pushed Dev into feeling something. Feelings weren't something he could understand in the book and every event seemed to create a little bit more understanding in his mind. From taking in a dog he really liked, to having to kill him due to rabies, to leaving his home in the end to search more survivors with Lucy and the child they raised together.

There were a lot of political mentions and various other bits here and there that maybe wasn't needed. Though looking at the world through the eyes of the characters this can be explained.

There is also a wave of rats and wild pigs that show up throughout the book. After some thought to this, I view the animals as the driving force to keep the characters moving or for Dev, to hole up and create a self imposed cage of sorts. A cage that he ends up leaving in the end.

Breaking down the book and looking at it in different lights makes the book intriguing. I didn't find it very humorous, though it is thought provoking. Within the culture of today, the zombie apocalypse is thought about and plans are made on how to survive it. There are no zombies in this book. It's the world.

I enjoyed reading about how one would survive with nothing was available anymore. This was about survival and how to go about it. This book doesn't gloss over the gore that's for sure.

Now that I've written up this very odd and different review, I still don't know what I truly think of the book. Do I want to know what happens when they leave at the end? Yes. So depending on what I'm looking at to review my range is between a 4 to a 5ish. Let's just say that this book will stick with me and has occupied my thoughts.

I have told people about this book and I can only say that I'm not sure how I feel about the book, but I couldn't put it down. It's a book that you either want to read and experience or it's not. The determination of how you perceived this story will be different from mine.
